The Grand Hotel is the former mansion of Sir Edward Barnes, who was the governer of Sri Lanka between 1830 and 1850. It’s large, palatial and brimming with character with roaring fires, immaculate gardens, high ceilings and polished dark wooden furniture. The rooms are comfortable and traditional; think dark red carpets, comfortable beds and colonial era inspired furniture. There are numerous places to dine, a snooker room, a small gym, spa and also a bar. It’s much larger than the other hotels we recommend in and around Nuwara Eliya with 163 rooms but we feel it’s a great option for those looking for more facilities without compromising on heritage, and hosts the infamous celebration high tea on their manicured lawn.
