Sinharaja Forest Reserve sits just under two hours north of Galle and is the island’s last remaining area of primary tropical rainforest. It’s a treasure trove of exotic and endemic plants, insects, reptiles, mammals and birds and it’s here where the rare blue magpie is sometimes spotted. Our trek begins with a journey in a jeep or van to the entrance of the reserve, before heading out on foot with an experienced local naturalist. With him/her you will go in search of the extraordinary flora and fauna that is found here. It’s a remarkable and archetypal rainforest, full of thick musty air and exotic sounds. This also means that is home to leaches so it’s not for the faint hearted! We highly recommend bringing waterproof clothes for this trek, as well as repellent and leech socks. If you are taking electronics with you we highly advise bringing some waterproof bags, as there’s a good chance of rainfall at any time of year. The trek is likely to last about 2-2.5 hours.
