This short tour explores Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, a pioneering project that started in 1988. The local staff and volunteers here collect vulnerable eggs (or purchase them from local people!) and hatch them back at their headquarters in Kosgoda. This is with the aim of releasing them back to the ocean within three days. Five species of marine turtle are found in Sri Lanka: the ridgeback, hawksbill, green turtle, olive ridley and loggerhead. With any luck you will be able to see one or more of these being looked after. Kosgoda sits just 15 minutes from Bentota and one hour from Galle along the coastal road.
