Although strictly a Battlefields lodge, Three Tree Hill is far enough west that it actually serves as a base for exploring the Drakensberg as well as the Battlefields. Simple colonial architecture prevails, with huge windows designed to be left open, creating the feeling that you are outside as much as inside. Wooden furniture, reddish stone floors and a garden filled with aloes remind you that you are firmly in Africa. With a view straight over the hill of Spionkop, it’s natural that battlefield tours are a key part of the reason to stay here, but walks into the mountains and the chance to learn more about the flora and fauna of the Drakensberg are also key.
