Located on the Namibian border about 100 kilometres from Upington, the only town of any size in this region, the Augrabies Falls National Park, as the name suggests, is home to the Augrabies Falls. Although not as high as other South African waterfalls, the geography makes these falls particularly impressive, as braided channels all send water roaring down into a narrow canyon, barely able to contain the roaring, seething river. In the indigenous Khoi language, Augrabies means Place of Great Noise. There is a simple restcamp here to use as a base when exploring the park: the chalets and cottages are very simply furnished and have self-catering facilities. There is a shop for supplies on the camp and a restaurant so you’re not obliged to cook for yourself!
