The long white sandy beaches, swaying palms and turquoise seas of southern Mozambique offer an unspoilt and idyllic beach escape. This is not an area of resorts and golf courses, it is an escape to pristine shores, open ocean and individual beach lodges.
The warm tropical waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine Sanctuary are an ecological paradise that offers fantastic diving and snorkelling opportunities. The park is a sanctuary for over 2000 species of fish, dolphins, turtles and the last viable population of dugongs in the western Indian Ocean. Further south there are three more nature reserves and two marine reserves offering more pristine reefs, although please be aware that diving opportunities depend on where you are staying.
From Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago south to Maputo there are a number of accommodation options to suit a range of budgets. Still relatively unsophisticated and undeveloped compared to other beach destinations around the world this is an area perfect for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-track coastal experience and makes a perfect beach add-on to any South Africa itinerary.
