Machangulo is a boutique hotel close to the capital, Maputo, making for simple access without compromising on the qualities that make this Indian Ocean coastline special. The location is outstanding, wedged between Inhaca Island and Santa Maria Peninsula, a picturesque one-hour boat transfer will get you here from Maputo. The lodge sits under the shadow of towering sand dunes, with a long stretch of beach that is so unspoiled it feels private. Year-round swimming is possible from the lodge, with the waters not susceptible to the tidal whims that can see the ocean recede into the distance in other areas of Mozambique. Activity highlights include snorkelling and diving amidst pristine coral, and whale watching is possible from the lodge itself when humpbacks pass between July and November. The fourteen chalets aren’t overtly opulent, but they are extremely spacious and comfortable, with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and private decks. Sympathetically spaced out to guarantee privacy, they are connected to the main lodge by walkways and staircases.
