KwaZulu-Natal has a variety of safari options, which include activities based around Lake St Lucia as well as more traditional land-based safari. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is the biggest reserve, covering some 96,000 hectares, and is most famous for its conservation of the white rhino. Around 1900, there were less than 20 white rhino left in the wild; conservation and rebreeding efforts began here, and were remarkably successful, filling the reserve and allowing them to send rhinos to other reserves across the continent. It is safe to say that without the efforts made here, the white rhino would probably be extinct in the wild today. The park also boasts all the other members of the Big Five and a variety of accommodation. There are a couple of excellent private reserves in the province, including Phinda, run by & Beyond, one of the pre-eminent names in the world of eco-tourism. Phinda was their first, flagship project and has been hugely successful in returning farmland to its original state, and populated with the original wildlife, including the Big Five and cheetah. Near to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi and Phinda is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, based around the lake systems of St Lucia and the coastline, where the ocean is separated from the lake by wonderful sand dunes. Whether looking at the birdlife and antelopes of the wooded shoreline, or the marine life from the hippos on the lake to the turtles and whales of the offshore marine park, there is a wealth of activities and experiences to enjoy here.
