A stay at Sandoval is all about location. Its setting on the edge of an oxbow lake gives it a beautifully serene feel, where you can enjoy memorable sunsets and the opportunity to look out for the giant river otters who make Lake Sandoval their home. It also strikes the balance of being accessible in an afternoon from Puerto Maldonado, but close enough to the primary rainforests of the Tambopata Reserve so as not compromise on wildlife. Sandoval is certainly one of the more rustic places to stay in the Southern Amazon, with a series of 25 cabins sharing rather thin walls and open ceiling space, but all have their own private bathrooms and electricity and hot water at certain times of day. And, while the communal areas of the lodge perhaps lack the polish of other options closer to Puerto Maldonado, the passion of the guides and the pristine setting of Sandoval make it a great choice for those looking for more of an in-depth introduction to the rainforest. (Please note that due to its remote location, part of the journey to get to Sandoval involves a 45 minute walk through the jungle meaning it will not be suitable for those with mobility issues).
