The Alila Jabal Akhdar is the latest addition to the accommodation options in the mountains around Nizwa, and is sure to become a favourite with travellers seeking some indulgent luxury on Oman’s most scenic mountain range. The property is perched on the corner of a dramatic cliff so some of the views are almost panoramic across the valley, and the design emphasis is on incorporating the immediate scenery and influences into the construction, so you can expect local and soft materials in abundance.
The resort has 78 rooms and villas, all of which have a view over the gorge and are of a good size, and as well as the stunning infinity pool, there is an opulent spa. Whilst children are welcome and there is a children’s programme on offer here, the property is more suited to couples and parents should be aware that some of the terrain around the resort is not ideal for younger children.
It is worth mentioning that this pampered isolation comes with a small price – the resort can only be reached with a 4WD (which we organise for all of our self-drive trips anyway) and is not an ideal base for sightseeing in the interior region since it is located an hour’s drive from the main road. The hotel has recently been granted its alcohol license, so sundowners by the pool are now on the menu.
