Shisr, a tiny well in the interior of Dhofar, gained international recognition in the early 1990s when Sir Ranulph Fiennes and a team of archaeologists identified it as a legendary lost city, Ubar, swallowed by desert sands. Debate rages as to whether or not this is the case, and the remains at Shisr are far from extensive, but for anyone who has read Fiennes’ “Atlantis of the Sands” and has an interest in the subject, Shisr is an important stop on a trip into the Empty Quarter.
