Located on the eastern-most tip of Oman, jutting into the Indian Ocean, Sur has always been a maritime settlement and the workhouse of Arabian seas, the dhow, is still constructed here: there are always numerous dhows dotting the harbour. The town is sleepy these days, and a pleasant place to spend an evening. Nearby is Ras Al-Jinz, famous as a nesting ground for the green turtle. Throughout the year, but notably in June-September, turtles crawl up the beach to lay their eggs in a protected reserve before returning to the ocean, a process that you can watch when visiting Ras Al-Jinz.
