Situated in a vast tract of dramatic scenery in the central Tsaris Mountains, Zebra River Lodge is a converted farmhouse that offers friendly, characterful accommodation and some hugely scenic activities. Surrounded by various rock types in striking formations amid the rolling mountains, decorated by quiver trees perched on precipitous peaks and zebra grazing on the rolling grassland, this beautiful spot is an equally fascinating destination for geologists and animal lovers alike. There are some wonderful unguided hikes along marked trails close to the lodge, while nature drives through the mountains can be booked to end at remote sundowner hotspots.

Your hosts can tell you about the unique history, geography and wildlife of the land, with ancient fossils, natural springs and abundant birdlife among the major attractions, in addition to a range of mammals that includes zebra, kudu and warthog. There is an enticing swimming pool in the gardens, along with some lovely al fresco dining areas and a lounge and dining room inside that is full of interesting local artefacts. The 12 rooms are innovatively designed and largely constructed from cooling local stone taken directly from the surrounding canyon. Hearty, home cooked food is on offer in the evening and it is easy for self-drivers to pop in for a couple of nights between visits to Sossusvlei.
