Part of the Mushara Collection of exclusive accommodations in private land roughly 10km from the eastern park gate, Mushara Lodge is an attractive option for Etosha self-drivers. Although it is arguably less luxurious than the Mushara Outpost, the Lodge has recently been upgraded so that the ten spacious thatched chalets are faultlessly smooth around the edges, with stone floors, modern facilities and a clean, contemporary feel. There is also a self-catering family house, a family chalet and a triple unit, meaning groups, families and independent travellers are inevitably drawn to the lodge.

We particularly like the large, tasteful main building, with a high thatched roof, grand fireplace, cosy sofas, intriguing décor and well-arranged dining tables. Outside there is a lovely swimming pool and a terrace for al fresco meals, and we thought the food at Mushara was excellent on our last visit. The lodge is definitely ideal for self-drivers keen to make their own way around Etosha, and for families looking for security and comfort amidst solid surrounds, but there are also guided excursions into the park on offer for less active guests. Best of all, the refurbs haven’t heralded a price hike, meaning that Mushara is still great value for money, at a similar price to the Etosha restcamps for significantly extra luxury.
