The extended Naukluft Mountains eco-system is an outstanding walking area for casual ramblers and committed trekkers alike. Whether you stay in the offshoot Tsaris Mountains or close to the exceptionally scenic Gamsberg Pass, there is a selection of marked trails close to your accommodation for unguided explorations of the rugged peaks. Guided treks can also be booked in advance, including overnight expeditions for those who are fit and intrepid enough, but most people tend to spend a couple of nights in the area for unhurried discovery under their own steam.
The geology of the area is fascinating, with thousands of years of climatic influence creating some truly exceptional landscapes, and the guides at your lodge will be able to explain this in further detail. There is also a decent amount of wildlife, including dassies, mountain zebra and kudu, most of which you will see in the distance as they remain skittish around humans on foot. Most of all, there are endless dramatic vistas and photo opportunities in surrounds that are markedly different from the nearby dunes of the Namib.
