Previously much neglected and overlooked, the Caprivi Strip is gaining increasing prominence on the Namibian safari scene. A thin ribbon of land in the north-east, at different points this area borders Angola, Botswana and Zambia, meaning it often combines well with trips to Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta. Experiences in the Caprivi often resemble those of the Delta but at less stomach churning prices, with beautiful wetland scenery and permanent rivers providing a base for scenic boat cruises, fishing and sometimes game drives. Wildlife numbers are not at the same level as Botswana’s Delta and Linyanti areas, but there are good volumes of lion, buffalo, zebra and antelope, with large gatherings of hippos and elephant throughout. With so much water around, this is also an outstanding birding area, on a par with virtually anywhere on the continent.

There are various national parks and reserves within the Strip, including Mudumu, Mamili and Bwabwata, all with slightly different attractions and animals. An itinerary combining multiple destinations within the Caprivi therefore provides excellent variety. All budgets are catered for, with some opulent lodges but the focus generally more on affordability and a warm welcome. This is also the most heavily populated area of Namibia, so you’ll pass through numerous small villages as you traverse the Strip. Perfect for a second time visitor to Namibia, or for those focusing more on animals, birds and boats than desert and mountains, the Caprivi should not be ignored.
