Take a ferry across to Naoshima from the mainland, and spend the day circumnavigating this breathtakingly beautiful island.  Plenty of modern-art exhibitions, outdoor sculptures and scenic walkways cover the island, making the entire landscape a work of art.

In the East Coast port town of Honmura you will find the Art House Project – abandoned houses and workshops that have been converted into art venues and installations, along with some quaint cafes to grab a coffee or a snack.  Next, head to the southern stretch of Naoshima – the true star of this destination, and the location of some of Japan’s most renowned galleries.  The Chichu Art Museum, built into the hillside, is as much as a work of art as its contents – this is our completely-biased recommendation, but there are plenty of other museums we can suggest for you as well.

The world-famous Benesse Art Museum is the ideal place to wrap up your day, with its ever-changing collection of pieces in the main building itself, and semi-permanent sculptures dotted around the nearby lawns and beaches. Take a photo of Kusama’s iconic Yellow Pumpkin before heading to your overnight accommodation, or return to the mainland if you’re not staying over.
