A renovated townhouse was built against the wall of Bundi’s fortified palace. It is an ideal base for exploring this traditional bazaar town off the usual Rajasthan tourist trail. Reached by foot via a twisting alleyway leading from Bundi’s maze of streets, Bundi Vilas is a charming boutique heritage haveli dating back 300 years; this is immediately obvious as you enter through the 40ft stone archway and climb up the winding steep staircase.
The seven rooms are cozy, simple, and completely in keeping with the building. Don’t expect extravagant luxuries but do expect good showers, stone arches, carved wooden doors and air-conditioning. The restaurant sits on the rooftop; it serves simple but tasteful Indian food and has views over the city. Bundi Vilas is by no means a luxurious property but what it lacks in facilities it makes up for with charm. It’s a fantastic base for exploring this majestic and exuberant city. The palace murals are exceptional and worth a journey.
