Today at sunrise, visit Harmandir Sahib (abode of God), though popularly known as the Golden Temple. The Golden Temple is the spiritual centre for the Sikh faith and is one of India’s most glistening, resplendent and photogenic sights. It’s richly gilded in gold and is home to the holiest of Sikh literature, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Enveloped by an artificial lake full of purifying water, the Golden Temple is crowned with a dome shaped like an inverted lotus. The first light of dawn creates an ethereal glow and the reflection of the temple on the lake is absolutely divine. Our guide will take you thorough the temple, around the lake, and along the marble corridors. You will learn about the temple’s turbulent history and its carved wooden panels and elaborate inlay work. You will also be taken to the largest community kitchen in the world, where you can contribute by helping make chapattis or serving food to the devotees. We feel the Golden Temple is one of India’s true highlights.
