Designed by Sir Edward Luytens and Herbert Bake, New Delhi offers a very different and contrasting experience to the ancient streets of Old Delhi. Most of New Delhi dates back to around 1911 when the British shifted their capital from Calcutta to Delhi, although many monuments date back a lot further. Our half-day tour explores Old Delhi’s wide tree lined avenues, formal parks, magnificent colonial buildings as well as some of the ancient highlights dotted around the area. At the heart lies Rashtrapati Bhawan, otherwise known as the Presidential Residence and the official home of the President of India. Designed by Lutyens, it is set within 330 acres of land.  The tour also takes in India Gate, originally known as The All India War Memorial; Qutab Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage site that soars 72 meters into the sky, and Humanyun’s Tomb, this was built in the 16th century and architecturally is considered the forerunner of the Taj Mahal. If time permits you may wish to visit the small National Gandhi Museum that showcases the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi.
