Tucked away on Brentwood Bay, just north of Victoria, the multi-award-winning Butchart Gardens were established in a small quarry in 1912 by Jennie Butchart, who had moved to this area of Vancouver Island six years earlier. Now covering 55 acres, the gardens feature multiple themed areas, including Japanese, Italian, and Mediterranean sections, as well as a visitor centre and gift shop. In spring and summer, thousands of flowers are in bloom, drawing butterflies, bees, and birds, while in autumn, the trees’ warm russets and ochres make for a picturesque visit.
Transfers or tours are available from downtown Victoria, or it’s a quick 25-minute drive if you have a car.
