Heading north from Gros Morne, the Viking Trail is the only main road leading all the way to St. Anthony. This route gets its name from its connection to L’Anse aux Meadows, the only confirmed Viking-era settlement in North America. Following the Great Northern Peninsula, the trail takes you through a rugged, off-the-beaten-track landscape, featuring rocky coastal headlands, towering mountains, and breathtaking fjords.

This region is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with moose and caribou frequently spotted along the roadside as you drive. Yet, it’s the rich cultural history that truly captivates. Along the way, you’ll find ancient burial sites, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and a collection of charming villages. The friendly and generous locals you meet here embody the spirit of Newfoundland’s founding communities, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
