Located on the south-eastern edge of British Columbia, Kootenay National Park offers incredible contrasts, from icy mountain rivers to steamy hot springs. This diverse landscape is also teeming with wildlife, with over 57 species of mammals and more than 180 bird species to look out for.
The park is easily accessible via Highway 93 South, which cuts through its centre. It’s just a 1.5-hour drive from Calgary or 30 minutes from Banff, making it a great addition to any trip through the Rockies. The village of Radium Hot Springs, just outside the park’s western entrance, has everything you might need during your visit.
Hiking, wildlife spotting, and camping are popular activities here, but one of the best ways to take it all in is by car. The 58-mile (94 km) scenic drive winds through valleys and over mountain passes, offering stunning views and countless photo opportunities along the way — so don’t forget your camera and binoculars!
