Salta & the North-West

Day 1

Fly on an overnight flight from London direct to Argentina's sophisticated capital, Buenos Aires, a flight time of around 14 hours.

Day 2

Arrive this morning in the city in Buenos Aires, with its beautiful wide boulevards, leafy and spacious parks, superb shopping and chic café society.

Day 3

Take a private guided tour of the city today exploring its contrasts from modern port at Madero to leafy Parisian style boulevards in Recoleta and the colourful La Boca neighbourhood.

Day 4

Take a different approach to exploring the city today as you take to two wheels and cycle some of the quieter corners of the city from Puerto Madero to an Ecological Reserve.

Day 5

Fly north to Salta, a pretty colonial style city with a beautiful historic centre and square. Join your guide for the next week on an exhilarating private 4WD adventure.

Day 6

The real adventure begins today with a journey through narrow Toro Gorge that crosses from the Lerma Valley into the Puna and crossing the Labyrinth Desert. Rustic lodging in Tolar Grande for two nights.

Day 7

Visit a historic mining town today surrounded by some of the highest volcanoes in the world and vast salt flats at Salar de Arizaro. Some breath-taking vistas on this journey.

Day 8

Cross Arizaro salt flat to the unique desert oasis at Antofalla with a tiny community of shepherds who invite you in for lunch. Look out for vicuna, llama and ostrich before arriving at rustic lodging in El Peñon for two nights.

Day 9

Venture into an enormous field strewn with pumice stone and then head to Laguna Grande reserve which, in summer months, is filled with various species of flamingos in this Andean sanctuary.

Day 10

Depart El Peñon to return to paved roads lined with fields of native grasses to the lush vine -filled valleys around Cafayate and the impressive Conchas Gorge. Stay in Cafayate tonight and enjoy the local wines.

Day 11

Your north-west off-road journey comes to an end today as you wend your way through the green vineyards of Cafayate back towards Salta for a final night to relax and reflect on your adventures.

Day 12

Leave the vineyards and red canyons of the North-West behind today as you return by air from Salta to Buenos Aires. End your trip in style at a dramatic and colourful professional Tango show, dinner included.

Day 13

It's time to head home. Transfer from your hotel to the airport. Fly from Buenos Aires via direct international flight back to London, travelling overnight.

This unique journey takes you to the hidden north-western corner of Argentina on a private exploration by 4WD, the only way to explore the furthest reaches of this unique environment. The high altiplano and desert valleys of the Puna run west and north of Salta towards the Andes, eventually veering down into the Atacama Desert, characterised by striking open vistas, rocky canyons and dotted with traditional local communities and villages, a far cry from urban life.

Begin with a short stay in Buenos Aires before heading to Salta to meet your guide and vehicle for your off-road adventure through canyons, gorges, desert valleys and lush vineyards. You are at altitude for much of your time here, maximum 4,500 metres which can take a little while to acclimatise to and it is important to keep warm (desert nights are cold) and hydrated. The accommodation on the Puna is very simple rustic lodging for a few nights but the rewards of this off-road adventure are the magnificent landscapes and friendly local people you will meet.
