African tribal design dominates this luxurious lodge offering 5-star accommodation at 4-star prices. Conical thatched roofs with stone caps make a dramatic statement, and the suites don’t lack for size either with a separate lounge area and a spacious private deck complete with plunge pool. African artwork and designs throughout the lodge attest to the owners’ taste and attention to detail. It’s hard to beat Safari Lodge for romance: returning from dinner you may find your vast bathtub filled and scattered with rose petals for a romantic bath before you sink into your four-poster bed draped in a mosquito nest.
Amakhala Private Game Reserve is around 7,500 hectares and until the turn of the millennium was farmland owned by a number of families, some of whom were 5th generation settler farmers. They joined their land together and made a game reserve, which now offers excellent game viewing (with four of the Big Five being routinely sighted: elephant, rhino, lion, and buffalo. Leopards live up to their elusive reputation!) as well as wonderful scenery with the Bushman’s River cutting a swathe through the reserve.
