Durban is principally a gateway to the attractions of KwaZulu-Natal, thanks to its brand new international airport, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. There is also the new football stadium, next door to the older rugby stadium where you could enjoy the special atmosphere of a home game for the Sharks Super 14 rugby team. The long beaches, washed with excellent surf, are a mecca for those who like their sun and watersports, whilst the uShaka Marine Park is excellent, with a water park, aquarium set in sunken ships, shops, restaurants and even pools where you can snorkel with the aquarium fish and even cage dive with its sharks. Northern Durban is where the suburbs of Umhlanga and Ballito can be found, pleasant neighbourhoods with some nice guesthouses. Its also where the Natal Sharks Board can be found; they are responsible for the shark nets that protect Durban’s beaches, and try to educate people about these amazing creatures.
