A new experience offered exclusively from Red Dunes Lodge, the Trans Kalahari walk is the perfect way to gain a detailed understanding of this region of the great southern desert. The hike lasts for two days, heading out with a private guide deep into the dunes to discover the unique flora and fauna. On day one, there will be a long stop to enjoy lunch on a secluded hilltop and watch the desert adapted wildlife while escaping from the harshest heat of the day. After pressing on for a further couple of hours into the dunes, the night will be spent in a comfortable temporary tented camp, erected on a high dune with sweeping vistas. Dinner is prepared on a campfire before a spot of stargazing over a nightcap and an unfeasibly peaceful night’s sleep.
The following day involves a visit to a plantation where scientific conservation projects are undertaken, before forging into the Nama Karoo, a very different habitat of shrubland and savannah, where there is still plenty of desert wildlife to discover. After a rewarding, tiring experience, it’s back to Red Dunes Lodge for a dip in the pool and a relaxing evening at the bar!
