With our preferred Southern Kalahari accommodations all offering access to private reserves or ranches, nature drives within these exclusive areas can provide a fascinating, serene introduction to desert wildlife and vegetation. A further bonus to conducting them on private land is that driving after dark is permitted, allowing for scenic sundowners and perhaps the odd glimpse of nocturnal wildlife on the way back to your lodge.
Drives can set out either in the morning or late afternoon, generally incorporating a search for animals such as oryx, jackal and ostrich with stops to discuss the vegetation and smaller details such as birds, plants and insects within the Kalahari eco-system. Taking place in 4WD vehicles with skilled driver-guides, you will be able to climb some of the highest dunes and access the most rugged routes, facilitating the best possible views and wildlife spotting opportunities.
