A great many of Morocco’s most famous cities, sights and monuments have appealing alternatives; alternatives that are less busy, often more remote, but more rewarding as a consequence. So there’s no need to always go for the best-known option: an alternative might be just what you’re looking for. So the ochre walls and souqs of Marrakesh are echoed in a more low-key way by the attractive southern town of Taroudant; whereas the hullabaloo and history of Marrakesh are magnified and undiluted in Fez. The Erg Chebbi may be the most famous sand sea in Morocco, but the Erg Chigaga is much larger and has hardly any visitors. And instead of a visiting focussing on the mountains, ocean and cities of the south, do the same in the north with a tour visiting Fez, Chefchaouen, Rabat and El Jadida.
