Just south of Ouarzazate, across the river of the same name, a cluster of fortified houses surround the base of a strategic knoll, topped with an imposing kasbah, dominating the surrounding, extensive palm groves. Part of the kasbah has been touched up for film appearances, but much of the rest of the settlement is gently corroding away and looks authentically ancient. Tifoultoutte is typical of the many valley settlements you’ll see in the south, and will probably be the first you see as you head down towards Zagora and the Draa Valley: it’s also one of the most picturesque.
