Less than an hour from Tangiers and a little further from Chefchaouen, Tetouan has had a turbulent history. Built in the 14th Century it lasted less than 100 years before being destroyed by the Spanish. Ironically it was Moorish and Jewish refugees who subsequently rebuilt the city about a century later. The architecture is wonderful, a superb example of Moorish – Andalusian styles, with a lovely mix of white-washed buildings and pointed arches. It’s some way off the standard tourist trail which makes it a bit more gritty and authentic than most cities you’ll visit in Morocco.
