The Glaoui were local warlords who through a combination of ruthlessness and French patronage came to rule vast swathes of southern Morocco during the time of the French protectorate. Major trade route through their lands met in Ouarzazate, and so they developed a massive kasbah, called Taourirt, to watch over proceedings. Although largely fallen into disrepair, it has been partially restored, like many kasbahs in the area, due to film roles, and it makes for an interesting hour or so whilst in Ouarzazate.
