Varanasi is at its best along the brilliantly spiritual ghats and each evening numerous ganga aarti ceremonies take place close to Dashashwamedh Ghat, near to Varanasi’s old city. During this time visitors enjoy the spectacular sound of bells and the devotional energy of pilgrims, arguably unrivalled in India. During the private ceremony the local priest chants Sanskrit shlokas (incantations); invokes positive energies and blessings; places a vermilion dot the forehead; sprinkles holy water for purification, and ties a red thread of blessing on the wrist. This is a highly unique and spiritual experience.
