Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim, a tiny Himalayan state known for its orchids and flowers and for the heavy influence of Tibetan culture. As part of your tour you will visit the Rumtek Monastery. Situated on the other side of the valley, approximately 24 km out from the town, this enormous and wealthy monastery is the seat for the Gyalwa Karmapa (the head of the Kagyupa order of Tibetan Buddhism). In recent years there has been a power struggle for the rightful successor, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. There are two likely contenders for the position; one from Tibet and the other from Bhutan. Despite this, they are welcoming to all visitors, and you should have the opportunity to enjoy the chanting or see a prayer session taking place. If you’re particularly lucky, you may even be offered a cup of salt butter tea. Please note it’s worth visiting Rumtek first thing in the morning, as during this time you are most likely to see the monks in morning prayer.
