Historic and laid back Orchha lies on the banks of the bolder-strewn Betwa River. It’s small and primarily a farming town, peppered with exquisite historical sites that date back to the 16th century; these can easily be explored on foot with a knowledgeable guide. Despite the towns rickety appearance, the palaces and temples in Orchha have retained their grandeur and many can be easily recognised by their towering spires and cenotaphs, which reflect majestically on the river below. Not to be missed is Lakshmi Narayan Temple that roofs a rocky hilltop as well as Raj Mahal, the ruin of the Royal Palace.  Orchha means ‘hidden’ and the sleepy medieval ambience makes this particular destination an incredibly special one. It’s an essential stop on the way to (or from) Khuajuraho and combines well with nearby Gwalior.
