The city of Kalimong (50km east of Darjeeling) might not seem much at first; however, it offers a bustling and colourful market, Himalayan views, a fascinating nursery industry, Buddhist monasteries (including Thongsa Gompa), colonial architecture and lots of potential walks through the surrounding area. Just like Darjeeling, Kalimpong once belonged to Sikkim as well as Bhutan, however it was a spot along trading routes rather than a tea producing area. The city comes alive on Wednesdays and Saturdays when villagers come to sell vegetables, medicines, wollen yarn and textiles. We think it’s a fascinating place to visit.
