Jodhpur’s formidable Meherangarth Fort is one of Rajasthan’s most impressive; towering above the city on a rocky outcrop it provides a magnificent view of the ‘Blue City’. The city really is blue, a colour that signifies ‘home’ to Brahmins, but the subtle shade is also said to repel insects. The old city is a labyrinth of tiny winding streets where traditional Jodhpur life unfolds at every corner. It’s easy to lose your way through the tangle of medieval streets, but with Meherangarh Fort watching over it’s easy to find your way again. There’s a fine and eclectic selection of places to stay, from small guesthouse type accommodation to contemporary boutique hotels, from international style hotels to opulent converted palaces. Jodhpur is arguably one of Rajasthan’s most intense, beautiful and diverse cities to explore and it combines wonderfully with Jaipur and Udaipur, as well as most routes through Rajasthan.
