Gwalior Fort is one of the biggest and most impressive forts in northern India; spanning an area of approximately 3 square kilometres it has a vast and colourful history. The Mughal emperor, Babur, described Gwalior Fort as ‘the pearl among fortresses in India’ and it’s clear to see why. It was originally built in the 8th century in an isolated hilltop location overlooking the city of Gwalior, with many parts, including the opulent Man Singh Palace, being added in the 15th century. Gwalior Fort changed hands over the years, from the Tomars to The Lodhis of Delhi, from the Mugals to the Marathas. Even the British had their time before handing the magnificent fort to the Scindias. Each occupier has left their mark making Gwalior Fort an intricate and incredibly fascinating visit. Being just south of Agra makes it an easy combination in many itineraries.
