Home to the Nattukottai Chettiars, a prosperous banking and business community, the Chettinad region in Tamil Nadu is well known for its large and opulently decorated 18th century mansions. This provides a fascinating change from the temple downs that dominate Tamil Nadu. A one or two night stop in this agricultural area will give you a wonderful insight into the legacy of the Chettiar people, their rich cultural heritage and the unique art and architecture that typifies the area. Chettinad has also become well known for its cuisine, defined by strong aromatic and spicy flavours made from ground masalas. Tile making and cotton weaving is also a speciality of the region and it’s possible to stop and observe these beautiful and traditional crafts. We highly recommend Chettinad as it deviates from the main tourist trails through South India and offers something truly unique.
