A stay at the rustic tented camp of La Leona is one of the most adventurous, back-to-nature experiences you can get in Costa Rica. A 45 minute trek along a wild, black sand beach is the only way to access this isolated spot, and facilities are undoubtedly basic, with cold-water showers and electricity only supplied to the main lodge building. That said, the canvas-roofed cabins are remarkably well-equipped with comfortable camp beds, wooden terraces and the option of private bathroom facilities. Hammocks are scattered around the grounds where you can relax and observe the gymnastics of spider monkeys in the trees above you, and listen to the screech of scarlet macaws. Hearty meals from a set menu are served from the main lodge building where you will also find a small bar. Tours are generally booked and paid for when you arrive, and include guided jungle walks by day or at night, hikes in the Corcovado National Park, bird watching and turtle tours in season.
