The Columbia Icefields is an impressive collection of glaciers that drape themselves over the continental divide, and the most accessible – the Athabasca Glacier – descends towards the Icefields Parkway. Here you can take a ride out on to the ice in a specially adapted vehicle, giving you unique access to the glacier and a rather humbling perspective of the surrounding mountains. Interesting commentary is provided along the way and you also have the opportunity to spend a bit of time actually on the ice, investigating a few nooks and crevices. The tour departs from the Glacier Discovery Centre where you will also find an interesting selection of interpretative displays about the history and geology of the area, as well as a restaurant and gift shop.
The Icefields are located about an hour and a half south of Jasper.
