[title] => Battambang

[content] => Considering it is considered Cambodia's second city, Battambang is a surprisingly quaint and low-key town. This is perhaps because it was off limits to most visitors until the Khmer Rouge cease-fire in 1996, but now it's an increasingly popular destination for travellers who search for ""real Cambodia"". It retains the character of a local market town, a far cry from the hustle and bustle of both Phnom Penh or Siem Reap (which could/should be considered Cambodia's second city!). There is a noticeably different feel on the streets - the pace of life is slower here, the people friendlier and the famous Cambodian smile much more in evidence.
Downtown Battambang is home to a collection of French colonial era shophouses rivalled only by Kampot on Cambodia's southern coast and, as Cambodians love markets, Battambang is home to several. Of particular interest is 'Psar Nat' (""meeting place market"") in the centre of town, housed in an impressive art deco style building and worth a look although it has a reputation for being the most expensive market in town. There are some food stalls in the centre of the market where cheap eats are available. The larger 'Psar Boeung Chhouk' is more of a wholesale market and especially busy in the early morning. It would appear that almost anything can be bought here!
Thanks to the relatively benign leadership of the local Khmer Rouge commanders between 1975 and 1979, many of the city's temples fared better than those in the rest of the country and make fascinating places to visit. There's plenty to do, but you needn't feel guilty if you miss something - a visit here is mainly about connecting with the real Cambodia, rural Cambodia.
The town is best accessed via a picturesque boat trip from Siem Reap.

[title] => Kampong Thom & Kampong Chhnang
[oldid] => 6143
[alias] => kampong-thom
[id] => 67
[state] => 1
[content] => Kampong Thom and Kampong Chhnang are neighbouring regions, in the great expanse of countryside and provincial towns between Cambodia’s more famous destinations.
Those choosing to take the scenic overland route between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, along much-improved sealed roads (complete with clean service stations and coffee stops) will possibly wish to break up the journey in the town of Kampong Thom. The pre-Angkorian Sambor Prei Kuk is a worthwhile diversion during a full day’s drive, and staying overnight in the region will allow you to experience a different side of Cambodia, and a slower pace of life.
For a true rural escape, Kampong Chhnang is a perfect option – just south of the famous Tonle Sap lake that sits in the middle of Cambodia, the region is relatively sparsely populated, but is blessed with beautiful scenery and friendly people. Nearby Oudong – the former capital – boasts temples, stupas and monks aplenty, making it a great stop-off point for those driving from Battambang to Phnom Penh on the ‘quiet’ side of the lake.

[title] => Kep & Kampot
[oldid] => 6144
[alias] => kep-kampot
[id] => 68
[state] => 1
[content] => The former port of Kampot is now a charming riverside town on the southern coast of Cambodia. It is home to a striking collection of colonial architecture, especially the area around the Old Market and along the Riverside Road. Other than being a pleasant sleepy backwater, Kampot rouses itself to produce some of the world's finest pepper in its plantations. With the town as your base, it is possible to explore Bokor Hill Station, often coated in a thick mist which adds to its desolate feel.
Kep, on the other hand, was Cambodia's grooviest seaside escape from the early 1900's until the 1960's - a thriving town which catered to rich French and the Khmer elite. Following independence from France, Kep went on to become the most exclusive beach town in South East Asia, as many large and luxurious villas lined the beach front. Like so much else, the Khmer Rouge years put paid to that and, until very recently, Kep had a desolate, abandoned air to it. Classic villas are still in evidence but most are in a pitiful state of disrepair. However, after many years in hibernation, Kep-sur-Mer is once again taking off, with new boutique hotels and resorts offering comfortable, atmospheric accommodation and delicious food.
Kep's setting is beautiful; wedged between lush forested mountains and the sea. The pace is wonderfully sedate. The town is still rich in ambience, often busy with Cambodians who, at weekends, come in increasing numbers for a seaside break and the renowned local crab.

[title] => Koh Kong & Cardamom Mountains
[oldid] => 6145
[alias] => koh-kong-cardamom-mountains
[id] => 69
[state] => 1
[content] => Koh Kong is a region close to the Thai border, the halfway point on the southern Bangkok to Phnom Penh route. It is where Highway 48 cuts straight through the jungle, under the shadow of the Cardamom Mountains - an area which remains ecologically-sound, largely down to its remoteness. This is one of the last remaining habitats for Asian elephants, bears, tigers and the Siamese crocodile.
The lowland virgin rainforest, lying the shadow of the mountains, is made up of deserted river islands and beaches, thundering waterfalls and mangrove-lined tributaries. Much of the area is recognised as protected forest and many NGOs work to secure the area's distinct eco-systems from loggers and poachers. Koh Kong is now emerging as a new centre for ecotourism, with several community tourism projects established in the area.
Peam Krasaop Wildlife Sanctuary is set within dense mangroves and has within a wooden walkway to explore the bird and sea life. The nearby village of Koh Kapi has stilted houses built over the tidal flats of the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Kong Island is the largest of Cambodia's off-shore islands and the west coast is flanked by beautiful white sand beaches. Inland, there are two major waterfalls, including Tatai waterfall which is within walking distance of the 4 Rivers Ecolodge.
For a unique experience visit the Wildlife Alliance Release Station for a stay to learn about the active conservation and rehabilitation of animals rescued from illegal trade. An incredibly rewarding stay perfect for animal lovers.

[title] => Mondulkiri
[oldid] => 6146
[alias] => mondulkiri
[id] => 70
[state] => 1
[content] => One of the last true wild frontiers in Southeast Asia, Modulkiri is windswept, isolated and adventurous - the largest, least populated and least accessible province in the country, nestled as it is against the border with Vietnam in the far east of Cambodia. The main town, Sen Monorom, is a sleepy laid back affair, in keeping with its remoteness.
The small villages of Phulung and Putang, just outside Sen Monorom, are the starting point for treks that vary in length from two hours to two days. Shorter treks journey through small villages and into the fringes of the forest, whilst longer options venture deep into the jungle past refreshing waterfalls where few visitors go. The region is at a high elevation, supporting unique flora and fauna among its hills, which is home to an indigenous population, including the Pnong who make up half the population.
The area is famed for its waterfalls - Bou Sraa Waterfall is the most impressive and famous Cambodia and, are celebrated in song throughout the country, despite most Cambodians never having visited them. There is an unusual double drop, plunging 15m then 30m into the jungle below.
Mondulkiri is also home to a number of rare animals; including tigers, bears and leopards. However, it is most famous for its elephant population and the Elephant Valley Project is a sanctuary for retired elephants in the jungles of the northeast. Instead of riding the elephants, visitors are invited to join the herd for a day, learning about elephant behaviour, watching these majestic creatures forage and helping them bathe. Much better than an elephant ride, this is more like observing the mountain gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda.
If you plan to visit this region a stay of three days would be the minimum recommendation. This area is not for the faint hearted as it is tough to get here and accommodation is basic but this is outweighed by the rich cultural variety and the remoteness of the area.

[content] => Kratie is a bustling town, brimming with character, picturesque without being gentrified in any way. This is a working town and very few travellers pass through - few enough for you to be a novelty. The town sits on the east bank of the Mekong River, and this west-facing aspect affords some of the best sunsets that can be witnessed in South-East Asia!
Somehow, Kratie got through the war years with much of the architecture and the road infrastructure left in tact. There are many attractive French-influenced homes and mansions scattered about, which add to the pleasant ambiance of the town.
Nearby, over the river, is Koh Trong - idyllic rural Cambodia, where the regions best accommodation is found.
For most, the principal reason for being here is to try catch a glimpse of the extremely rare Irrawaddy dolphins. There are thought to be only 75 remaining in total (across both Cambodia & Laos) and between 15 / 20 of these freshwater dolphins make their home on a beautiful stretch of the Mekong River near a small set of rapids 8 miles north of town.
Kratie is usually accessed by local boat (3 hours) from Kampong Cham or it is a 3 hour drive from Phnom Penh on decent roads.

[state] => 1
[content] => Tucked away in the far northeast of Cambodia is ruggedly beautiful, rarely visited Ratanakiri. Rarely visited, fabulously remote and utterly authentic.
This region is home to much of Cambodia's endangered wildlife and whilst Khmer, Vietnamese, Laotian and even Chinese communities can be found, the region is also where a number of minority ethnic tribes – largely the Kreung and Tompuon – come from. Both of these groups are famous for their traditional ceremonies, including elaborate burial practices. The villagers live in simple hand made stilt houses and, predictably, agriculture is the source of income.
Ratanakiri is one of the poorest and most underdeveloped regions of Cambodia and highways are simple pot holed dirt roads. Electricity and running water are a rare commodity. It is possible to visit charitable projects in the area where you can purchase high quality local handicrafts and locally produced coffee to do your bit to help.
Banlung, also known as ""the red town"" due to the earthy roads, is the provincial capital of the Ratanakiri region and the only place with an operational airport, so hence the entrance or exit point for most visitors. As well as air access you can reach Banlung via a rather uncomfortable rutted road from Phnom Penh or, for the very adventurous, an exciting boat journey from southern Laos.
Elsewhere in the province there are several large waterfalls, many gem mines and the opportunity for river trips in to the forest interior. Serenely beautiful and surrounded by jungle, Yeak Lom is Cambodia's finest natural swimming pool - a freshwater lake in a volcanic crater. Virachay National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Cambodia, is located in the far northeast of the province - treks are possible into the Phnom Veal Thom wilderness area.

[content] => You shouldn't overlook Phnom Penh, the capital, during your visit to Cambodia. Commentators have been saying for many years now that this city is still in a process of finding its feet after years of turmoil. After all, Phnom Penh was empty as recently as 1975, as a consequence of the perverse ideology of the Khmer Rouge. However, it's time to simply acknowledge what it is today – a charming city, slightly rough around its edges, but vibrant, utterly enthralling and increasingly relevant nonetheless.
It may not be as brash as its megapolis neighbours – Bangkok to the east, Saigon to the west – but this is instead a more graceful capital, once known as the 'Pearl of Asia'. Much of this colonial charm is evident in riverfront area, perfect for a late afternoon stroll.
Away from these central streets, Phnom Penh retains a rather dusty, small town feel and in places it is easy to imagine the city as it once was - shady boulevards, French colonial buildings, pagodas, monks in saffron robes and the golden spires of the Royal Palace. However, fast forward out of this riverie and you will notice a million motorbikes buzzing around and an explosion in tourist-friendly commerce - boutique hotels, designer restaurants and specialist shops. The future looks bright and Phnom Penh is embracing it.
The capital offers a wealth of opportunities to explore both sides of its character, ancient and modern day history being equally enthralling. The Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, the National Museum are all ""must see's"" on any visit. There are vibrant and colourful markets galore, where anything and everything is for sale. A visit Tuol Sleng (S21) and the Killing Fields is sobering and rather harrowing. Certainly recommended, but its not for everyone.
Phnom Penh has a profound story to tell and retains a strong sense of exotica, as it rushes full throttle towards the future.

[title] => Siem Reap
[oldid] => 6150
[alias] => siem-reap
[id] => 74
[state] => 1
[content] => When French naturalist & explorer Henri Mouhot visited Angkor in the 1840's, he wrote:
"It is grander than anything left to us by Greece or Rome, and presents a sad contrast to the state of barbarism in which the nation is now plunged. At [Angkor], there are ruins of such grandeur that, at the first view, one is filled with profound admiration, and cannot but ask what has become of this powerful race, so civilised, so enlightened, the authors of these gigantic works?"
The awe-inspiring temples of Angkor constitute the most important and impressive historical site in Asia - a simple statement of fact. Many falsely assume that it is just the one temple – Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument - but in fact there are more than 1,000 structures in the area, all built between the 9th and 13th centuries. This is the sacred skeleton of what was once the social, religious and administrative centre of the Khmer Empire and the scale is vast. Many of these ruins were not technically temples, but rather the remains of a vast ancient city which include places of worship, learning and healing - immense building projects undertaken by successive Khmer kings. There remains little evidence of the inhabitants of what was one of the biggest cities on earth in its time - a million people are estimated to have lived at Angkor at a time when London only had a population of barely 50,000. This is because the people - from slaves to the King himself - lived in wooden structures, all of which have long-since vanished.
The centrepiece, Angkor Wat, is without doubt the most impressive in scale, but not always cited as the most memorable. This accolade is often reserved for Ta Phrom, or The Bayon, or Banteay Srei, or some other remote complex of ruins you happen upon as they are caught by the late-afternoon sun. For a site of such international renown, exploring the temples ruins can be a spiritual and deeply personal experience.
Your base for exploring the complex is the nearby town of Siem Reap, located just a couple of miles down the road. The town itself is of little historical importance, as for many years it was simply a dusty French-accented backwater. However, while Siem Reap may be struggling to retain its small town charm, its opulent resorts, sophisticated restaurants, chic bars and exclusive shops are evidence that it has become a destination in its own right.
As well as the perfect base to explore the temples of Angkor, there are also plenty of activities beyond the temples to warrant a longer stay in the region. Indeed, most visitors only come to Siem Reap for two or three days, but many find that this not enough to explore the temples and still have time to enjoy the lively town, nearby Tonle Sap Lake and its idyllic rural surrounds.

[content] => The Islands on Cambodia’s south coast have long been one of the countries best kept secrets – until now. The powdery white sand beaches lapped with clear blue seas conceal small islands with dramatic headlands and jungle forests home to luxurious hideaways perfect for a slice of well deserved R&R after time spent soaking up the history and culture of Cambodia. The opening of a number of high end 4 to 5 star luxury resorts in 2018, and the arrival of international flights to Sihanoukville is seeing the area hitting the headlines as one of the next island hot spots in Asia.
Once a backpacking paradise with beach parties and island camping, the steady development on the islands has changed things for the better. The pristine beaches and turquoise waters are home to boutique beach bungalows ideal for families to luxurious overwater bungalows rivalling the Maldives. Getting here involves a speedboat ride from the mainland town of Sihanoukville or, for those with cash to splash, a breathtaking helicopter ride.
The only decision to make now is which island - Koh Russey, Krabey, Koh Rong or Koh Rong Samloem? Contact us to help you pick your perfect slice of paradise (you can thank us later).

Cambodia is a country of picture-postcard images: wide smiles; orange-robed monks; tropical fruit; more smiles; temple spires poking above the dense jungle; lush rice paddies; colourful tuk-tuks; traditional wooden boats; and yet even more smiles!
At the centre of this is the architectural masterpiece, the Temples of Angkor. One of the seven wonders of the forgotten world and widely considered the most advanced civilisation of its day, they’re worth every accolade that has ever been bestowed upon them.
Noticeably less developed than its neighbours, Cambodia has a fairly turbulent and recent past. 30 years of turmoil were initiated by the Vietnam War and then exacerbated by the Khmer Rouge, a ruthless regime that wished to create a peasant-led, agrarian utopia… and killed one in five Cambodians in the process of trying. It’s a real testament to the Khmer people and their spirit that, despite three dark decades, there’s a pervading feeling of optimism wherever you go in Cambodia. The one thing most remarked upon by any visitor is, without exception, the lasting impressions of the people and the stories they have to tell. How can they possibly be so helpful, warm and genuinely friendly, having lived through so much?
Phnom Penh is the nation’s reborn capital, retaining some faded French colonial splendour, with wide, tree-lined boulevards and impressive architecture set in a rapidly emerging Asian city. Then there’s the laid-back, colonial heritage of Kep & Kampot; teetering stilt villages lining the great Tonle Sap Lake, the natural wonders of Koh Kong and the Cardamom Mountains, the untamed north-east and, to top it all, the tropical brilliance on the southern sands. This history-laden kingdom is full of surprises, not to mention the fantastic (and largely unknown) Khmer cuisine and wonderful artisan craftwork – Cambodia is a country with a lot to offer.
The weather in Cambodia is easy to understand, thanks to its uniform latitude and low altitude. Travel is possible year-round, although the period from November through to February is generally considered to be ‘high season’. However, each season brings its own benefits, with rainfall during the wet season rarely lasting more than a couple of hours in the afternoon, whilst hotel rates plummet and the countryside is at its most lush and verdant. Many people actively prefer to travel during the rainy season, and we don’t blame them.
There are two distinct seasons in Cambodia:
The Dry Season: October – April/Early May
The dry season is, of course, when visitor numbers peak. In more remote parts, the roads are at their best and journey times are shorter because of this. Whilst October through to January are quite cool by Cambodian standards (still in the high 20°C’s!), by April the weather is absolutely scorching. When Cambodia is at its hottest, it’s only really possible to make early morning and late afternoon excursions, with a few hours needed by the hotel pool sheltered from the sun over lunch. This happens to work perfectly when visiting the temples of Angkor!
Kep & the Islands Koh Rong, Koh Russey & Krabey on the south coast are popular during the dry season, as they bask in the brilliant sunshine and sea conditions are perfect. Over the period from late March through to May, river and lake levels are at their lowest before the rains arrive, so travel by boat can be problematic.
The Wet Season: Early/Mid May – October
Almost 80% of Cambodia’s annual rainfall falls over this period, with daytime temperatures averaging between 25°C and 27°C. The early months of the wet season (May to July) are still very hot, and the rainfall is usually infrequent, with short and fast downpours before the skies clear. In the latter months (late July to September), the rains tend to become more constant and are often heavy. This makes travel to the more remote corners of the country almost impossible due to the state of the roads.
Travelling in monsoonal Cambodia does have its advantages, though – the dust is gone and the lush greenery of the countryside returns. Angkor Wat, in particular, is stunning during the wet season, with moats brimming and a drastic drop in other visitors to share the magic with.
Before you travel with us, you’ll receive a guide to local restaurants and food in Cambodia, but in the meantime, we’ve included a little introduction to Cambodian cuisine below.
Cambodian food isn’t particularly spicy, although it’s often delicately flavoured with herbs such as lemon grass and coriander. Many Khmer dishes are variations on cuisine from other Asian countries, China’s in particular. Food is traditionally cooked in a single pot or wok over a charcoal stove; although gas burners are being introduced in the cities, many people prize the smoky flavour that food acquires when it’s cooked over charcoal. A lot of dishes are fried in palm oil and aren’t drained before serving, so the food can be quite greasy. If you’re vegetarian, it’s worth being aware that the pan is seldom washed out between the meat and vegetable dishes. Few Cambodians have refrigerators, and even if they do, they prefer to buy produce fresh from the markets as needed.
The cheapest food in Cambodia is available from street hawkers with hand carts or baskets dangling from a shoulder pole. Sell anything from fried noodles or baguettes, to fresh fruit and ice cream, there’s plenty to sample. Another source of cheap food is the country’s markets – open both day and night, though often in separate locations – where stalls sell a variety of dishes and desserts at prices only slightly higher than those charged by street hawkers. Each stall usually has its own speciality, and you can order from any stall in the market irrespective of where you’re sitting. When you’ve finished, you pay the stall closest to you for the whole lot, and they’ll sort out the money among themselves.
Most Cambodian meals are based around polished white rice, which is usually served either in a large bowl from which you help yourself or as individual platefuls. You’ll typically order two or three dishes each – fish or meat, vegetables and perhaps a soup – which are placed in the centre of the table; each person around the table then helps themselves from the communal fare in small amounts at a time. Smoky, charcoal-grilled chicken and fish are available everywhere, from roadside stalls to restaurants. The fish is served with a grated green mango, chilli, garlic, and fish sauce dip, while the chicken comes with a salad garnish and a sweet chilli sauce.
In the afternoon and evening, crusty baguettes, filled with your choice of meat pâté or sardines and pickled vegetables, can be bought from street hawkers for around 2000 riel. At beer stalls in the night markets, you’ll find grueng klaim, fibrous strips of dried beef or pork served with pickles and generally eaten with alcoholic beverages.
Water in Cambodia
Bottled water is found everywhere, as Cambodian tap water isn’t considered safe to drink. Be aware that the ice that is invariably added to cold drinks (unless you request otherwise) may not be hygienic except in Western restaurants.
There are currently no direct flights from the UK to Cambodia. The best options are flights via Bangkok (Thai, EVA or BA), via Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific) via Kuala Lumpur (Malaysian or BA) via Vietnam (Vietnam Airlines) or via Singapore (Singapore Airlines). A number of other airlines also fly to Cambodia via their respective hub cities or connecting to other airlines including Emirates, Bangkok Airways, Air Asia, Air France, Asiana Airlines, Cambodia Angkor Air, Cebu Airways, China Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Dragon Air, EVA Air, Jetstar Asia, Korean Air, Lao Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Shanghai Airlines, Silk Air, Tiger Airways and Vietnam Airlines.
We always price up our flights on a case-by-case basis, making sure we use the best available deals for your trip. If you have any particular preferences for airlines or routes, or are considering upgrading your flights, please do let us know so we can help find the best and most convenient options for you.
If you’re a UK passport holder, you’ll need a visa for entry into Cambodia, as well as a minimum of 6 months of validity remaining on your passport from the date of your return to the UK after leaving Cambodia. The standard visa is valid for 30 days from the date of arrival in Cambodia. Tourist visas can be applied for either online or on arrival at your designated entry point. Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at the international airports (Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville), without prior registration. Non-UK passport holders should check with their local Cambodian embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information.

As we’re not medical experts, we feel it’s essential you contact your GP regarding vaccinations and the like for travel to Cambodia. In addition to such vaccinations as you’d routinely have for living in the UK, further boosters are recommended for Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Polio and Tetanus. If you have visited a country where Yellow Fever is endemic, you’ll need a certificate of vaccination.
You must talk to your GP first, but it’s worth also drawing your attention to this useful website: traveldoctor.co.uk – an interactive website providing specialist health information for travellers, plus customised lists of travel medicines, vaccines for holidaymakers, global adventure travellers and expeditions.
Malaria is present in some rural areas of Cambodia at certain times of the year.
Cambodian Riel (R) is the official currency in Cambodia. There’s no coinage in Cambodia, only currency notes. However, the US dollar is the de facto currency and by far the most useful to have on hand. Most hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, buses and airlines actually set their prices in US dollars. Local currency is only used in small transactions, and often, if you pay in US dollars, change will be given in Riel, thus building up a small cash float of more than you will actually need. It’s best to keep a good supply of small-denomination US dollar notes with you, and it’s worth noting that worn or ripped banknotes will not be accepted – bring clean, unmarked bills only.
We recommend packing plenty of comfortable, lightweight clothing in natural fabrics such as cotton when travelling to Cambodia. The dress code is fairly casual, as in most parts of the tropics, but it’s advisable to cover arms and legs in the evenings to protect yourself against biting insects. A lightweight raincoat and umbrella are a good idea in the rainy season, with the umbrella doubling up as a useful shade from the sun. You shouldn’t wear shorts, short skirts or other skimpy clothing when visiting temples and monasteries and should ensure you have appropriate clothing for any visit to Angkor; otherwise, your access to the temples will be limited. Shoes (and socks!) must be removed before entering any religious building or private home. We recommend wearing shoes without too many laces, which can easily be taken on and off.
The Khmers are remarkably laid-back, friendly and relaxed – their hospitality is legendary. However, you do need to remind yourself that Cambodia is, in fact, a very conservative country where modesty is the order of the day. You can dress skimpily – many travellers do – but it won’t do you any favours in terms of the Khmers’ perception of you. If you are in a temple, it’s better to dress reasonably modestly, but by the same token, don’t get unnecessarily stressed about what is and is not appropriate. Be assured, they have seen it all! Likewise, openly public displays of affection will embarrass people, so don’t do it. Have respect for monks in general, women should never touch them.
As with other countries in the region, the concept of “face” governs social interaction on every level. You will get things done faster if you go out of your way to make sure that you don’t cause someone to lose face. If you find yourself getting angry, try not to show it, as this will only be counter-productive. Another thing to remember is that a Cambodian reaction to uncertainty or embarrassment is simply to giggle or laugh. Smile and joke as much as you can instead – it’s the Cambodian way, and people will be more willing to help you.
As in all Buddhist countries, the head is considered holy, while the feet are considered dirty. Don’t go around touching people’s heads, even if it’s just patting a child on the head. Likewise, don’t point the soles of your feet at anyone and certainly not at a Buddha image. Cambodians tend to sit on the floor with their feet tucked to the side.
We believe travel should be a force for good. That means exploring with open eyes, treading lightly, and respecting the people and places that make the world so special. Our code of conduct isn’t about rules, it’s simply a guide to help you travel thoughtfully, ethically, and with care. Because every small choice makes a big difference.
If you choose to trust us with your holiday, we’ll send you a “Travel Facts” document when confirming your booking. This includes useful facts and travel advice, such as restaurant recommendations, reading tips, basic language information, cultural traditions, climate information, brief historical overviews, and more. We feel that this offers a useful insight and can help you interact with local residents in a more sensitive, well-informed manner. Please do try to take the time to read this information before your visit, it’s worth the time!
A number of the countries in which we operate holidays are religious societies with a widely observed set of customs. Always respect these norms, particularly when visiting religious buildings.
To the best of our knowledge, all hotels, lodges, and camps within our portfolio operate stringent measures to minimise water usage. All of our destinations have issues with water supplies to a certain extent, so feel free to raise any possible wastage should you encounter it during your stay, either with the accommodation or with us upon your return.
Please ask permission before taking photographs of people, and respect their wishes if they are not happy to be photographed. We find that friendly requests and a smile are usually met with a ‘yes!’
Strive, where possible, to make your own contribution to environmental practices as you travel. This might include minimising your electricity usage, not smoking in protected areas, avoiding coral while snorkelling, and safely disposing of all litter (recycling where possible).
Where possible, try to purchase from local suppliers. This includes shopping for souvenirs, dining out at restaurants, and booking additional excursions during your free time. In areas where haggling is an accepted part of daily life, don’t be offended if you’re unable to obtain what you perceive as a fair price for an item.
We emphasise to local suppliers that our clients should never be taken on unsolicited shopping trips, but if this does happen, try to retain your sense of humour, provide a firm refusal to participate and do let us know about it on your return. We pass on all feedback from every trip undertaken with us to our relevant local suppliers, who all share our commitment to travelling with sensitivity.
Please don’t remove any indigenous items from their natural habitat and attempt to bring them home as a souvenir. This particularly applies to everything from coral, shells, plants and food in the natural world, to cultural artefacts and antiques.
If you’re unsure about anything relating to the above, please feel free to chat to us. Our Cambodia experts have travelled extensively in the country and will be more than happy to offer their considered advice.
